LED TV technology is essentially an LCD television that no longer uses the traditional fluorescent lighting but rather, LED backlighting. However, this is not the same as an LED display. LED will come in either dynamic RGB that is positioned in the rear of the panel or, white edge LED that is found on the rim of the screen. White edge LED incorporates a specialized diffusion panel using a light behind the screen that is evenly distributed. Today there are a number of electronic manufacturers that create LCD televisions with the LED backlighting technology.
An Explanation of LED TV Technology
This TV technology is much different than the traditional LCD panel and must be clarified in all advertising methods. Furthermore, there is a difference in true LED displays and other LED displays in the fact that LED TVs are not self illuminating through those technologies. There are multiple ways of backlighting an LCD television with LED technology. One of the benefits of an LED backlight is the brightness of contrast in comparisons to traditional backlighting. Furthermore, this technology provides benefits in color gamut which means that lower power consumption is a possibility. Although this technology is beneficial, the largest obstacle in the use of LED backlighting on LCD televisions is manufacturing costs.
Benefits of LED TV Technology
Whether or not the chosen LED technology be dynamic RGB or white edge, both variations offer different benefits. The first LED television that offered dynamic RGB technology was created to have a color gamut twice that of a conventional LCD television; which means that the lights radiating from red, green and blue LEDs create a white that was much more pure than a single white light. This creates a stronger contrast in the picture. Sony introduced their 40 inch Bravia KLV-40ZX1M with white edge LED lighting in September 2008. This technology provided benefits in certain areas such as increasing the possibility of building a slimmer casing. Shortly after, Samsung created their own version of white edge LED lit LCD televisions. Each of these models also offers a much slimmer casing.
Led TV as the Better Choice
LCD televisions that use this technology are known to be a wiser choice among other television models due to the longer life, and smaller power consumption, than plasma televisions or traditional LCD TVs. Moreover, with LED TV technology there is no mercury in the design. However, LED televisions may contain other components such as arsenic and gallium that can be found in the LED emitters. Because of this, there are many that argue whether or not this technology will prove better for the environment in the long run. However, most would agree that disposal of these televisions will not be an issue. The biggest benefits of LED TV technology is the ability to create very high contrast ratios by producing deep blacks and high brightness that ultimately provide a better picture. This is due to the LED technology having the ability to be switched on and off at a much quicker rate.
